The Western Classical Culture section deals with the ancient civilization, history, antiquities, art, philosophy, drama and theater, literature, literary criticism of Greece and Rome. It also teaches languages such as Greek and Latin.
The section on Christian Culture offers a unique opportunity for students of any religious affiliation, Christian or not, to learn of Christianity as one of the worlds' religions.
The University of Kelaniya proudly marks the Golden Jubilee of Christian Culture as an academic discipline fifty years since its introduction to the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies under the visionary leadership of Prof. W. S. Karunaratne.
Origins (1976): The study of Christian Culture began in 1976 with its first batch of students. The subject quickly grew in academic significance and student interest.
Department Formation: Over the years, the discipline evolved through several structural changes within the university. In 1998, the department was renamed the Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian Culture, reflecting its expanded academic scope.

The Department of Western Classical Culture and Christian Culture of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Kelaniya ceremonially inaugurated the 13th Batch of Master of Christian Studies Degree Program on 09 May 2026 at the university premises. The event marked the commencement of another academic journey dedicated to the advancement of Christian studies and interdisciplinary humanities education
Ālōcanā, the art exhibition on “Witness Christian Art Through a Sri Lankan Lens,” was held at the Art Gallery of the University of Kelaniya on the 28th of January 2026. It was organized and conducted by the final year students pursuing BA Honors in Christian Culture at the Department of Western Classics and Christian Culture, University of Kelaniya.
